Waimaths Success for SAMS

Last night we had a number of students participate in the regional Waimaths competition. Our Year 7 Team came 3rd and we won 1st, 3rd and 4th Place in the poster competitions. Our Year 8 team performed well on the night but did not place.

Hinuera ignimbrite

Hinuera ignimbrite (often marketed as Hinuera stone) is a yellow-cream to pale-brown ignimbrite containing angular fragments of pumice in a fine-grained matrix of volcanic ash. It is still quarried today, and widely used for cladding buildings in the North Island.

Andesite

Andesite is a fine-grained, extrusive igneous rock composed mainly of plagioclase with other minerals such as hornblende, pyroxene and biotite. The specimen shown is about two inches (five centimeters) across.

Some Moon Facts from Kathrin via email - difference between Earth and Moon and how landforms were created  Moon had very active volcanism in it's early history - there are still remnants of volcanoes, but most of all Moon was heavily bombarded by meteorites causing many of the craters we can see today. Earth also received meteorite hits but contrary to the moon today they are hard to make out - partially because of all the vegetation we have  in contrast but also because of the lack of erosional forces that lack on the moon in contrast to Earth.

We all enjoyed the great show 'Speak Easy' by Marcell Bertrand on Friday. She has helped give us some awsome tips for when we have our turn writing and presenting speeches next term.

Next week sees our Year 9 and 10's heading out to compete in our middle school cross country competition. Having seen the Room 6 students practicing I think we will be in for a great day with plenty of placings from our students. Remember to bring your togs aswell so we can cool off and have some fun at Waterworld after we've finished competing.

It is great to see so many students keeping on top of their writing work and research, showing great time management skills and self management skills.

WELCOME BACK EVERYONE!!

I hope you all had a lovely break and are revived ready to start our busy term.

We have got some really exciting subjects to explore together this term and I am especially looking forward to the cross country coming up soon. I am sure our year 9 and 10's will do well representing SAMS.

Already this term I have seen some students stepping up to become leaders in various curriculum areas and I am excited to see the benefits this will have for our class.

Athletics Day - Cambridge

We had a really great day out at Cambridge for athletics. Our Year 9 and 10 group did really well and took out many of the placings available!! I was really impressed with those students who entered numerous events and continued to participate right throughout the day. There were a few students who really supprised me with their athletic talents and I think these will have to be utilised during our PE sessions.

What a great day!
Congratulations to all the students who remembered to arrive at school early to catch the bus out to Cambridge. While the weather proved trying and most of our non swimmers looked like they had been for a dip in the pool, we were very pleased with the results earned by our participants. Well done to all the students who came and supported our swimmers for your excellent behaviour and supporting cheers!
